Amazon is resuscitating everyone’s first favorite fantasy universe, bringing The Hobbit to Prime members. HBO is spinning the show off and making prequels. The networks, both the old ones and the new, are certainly trying. Culture is more fractured than it’s ever been, and yet a show on a premium cable network is setting ratings records and earning dedicated verticals on well regarded websites. The end of Game of Thrones will kill more content jobs this year than green energy will kill coal jobs. The painstaking recaps, the obsessive speculation, the conventions, the podcasts, the message boards, the globe-traversing scavenger hunts, the limited edition cookies, the hours-long waits to sit on a cold prop. I like Game of Thrones-really, dragons, zombies, gratuitous nudity, decapitation, these are the hallmarks of a timeless classic-but before the season even began I was feeling exhausted.
