The book is sui generis, a circle in a spiral, a linguistic Escher drawing, and an act of pure linguistic pyrotechnics, one that includes monologs, dreams, philosophy. It’s natural things should not be so clear at night, isn’t it now. But the action of Ulysses was chiefly during the daytime, and the action of my new work takes place chiefly at night. They compare it, of course, with Ulysses. I can’t understand some of my critics, like Pound or Miss Weaver, for instance. ![]() ![]() James Joyce’s novel is an act of pure linguistic pyrotechnics, so when faced with the task of illustrating it John Vernon Lord was understandably “bewildered.” ![]() ![]() ![]() The story is somewhat reminiscent of Kazuo Koike and Goseki Kojima's Lone Wolf and Cub series, where a samurai wanders the earth with his infant son, killing for hire, and Road to Perdition, which also features a criminal Dad with his young son driving for him and reading comics along the way. Reading the comic gives him an opportunity, too, to connect with a girl in the town where dear Daddy does his job. But also sweet and sad happens, too, in this back-story special issue.Īlong the way, Tracy reads a comic, Fang, The Kung Fu Werewolf (drawn for us in fifties/sixties pulp fashion by Phillips), which connects with the main story as in the comic within a comic in Alan Moore's Watchmen. Hey, it's dark noir, so be prepared for bad stuff to happen. ![]() ![]() Ten years after Criminal had apparently finished its run, Brubaker return to the world of Tracy Lawless and Teeg, though the focus here is of a twisted and sad story of twelve year old Tracy accompanying his (criminal) Dad on one of his jobs. ![]() ![]() ![]() Problem 2: The loooooong run on sentences are a constant problem, not an occasional one. I skimmed the rest of the book and sadly the writing voice issue never stopped.) Wow, this got old fast! (Read the first few pages of the Sweet Dreams sneak preview and you'll see what I mean. "I went into.", "I noticed that.", "I couldn't get.". Problem 1: It felt as if HALF the sentences started with the word "I", which to me showed a lack of creative story telling. So what is wrong with the writing? The major issues I found were: ![]() In truth, she may have told a great story in this book but I will never know. In full disclosure I only made it 10% (60 pages or so) into it before I couldn't take anymore, so this review is not about the story itself. Many readers have been able to look past the writing issues, so maybe you can too. ![]() So if you care about well written stories, be sure to read the free chapters online before you buy. More so, she doesn't have a polished writing voice, nor does she have a solid grip of basic writing rules. ![]() I found this book to be nothing more than an unedited rough draft not ready for prime time. Her stories may be interesting and heartfelt (according to many of her fans), but her writing is NOT great. This was my first - and last - book by this author. ![]() |
